Bois D' Arc Acres Alpaca Farm is a small, family owned farm
located outside
of Windom, Texas near the Red River Valley.
Question: "What in the world is a Bois D' Arc?"
Well, bois d' arc (pronounced bo-dark) refers to a species
of tree native to northeast Texas and southeast Oklahoma.
The tree bears a fruit (not edible) about the size of an orange.
Natives refer to this fruit as horse apples.
Legend has it bois d' arc was important to the trade of
Native Americans (Caddo Indians). The wood was used for
making bows and arrows and because it has a yellow texture,
it was also used for making dyes.
Thus, the reason for the other two names, bow wood and bois jaune (yellow wood).
Since the Bois d' Arc Creek runs near our place and since our little farm
is covered with bois d' arc trees, the name seems to fit.
